# Let’s Be Humans: Embrace the Beauty of Writing
28 March 2023
There is something fundamentally wrong with all music engraving tools. They all treat music as something that we need to build block by block. Not only does it require constant change of the flow of your working process, but also limits your ability to think and act out of box.
Music is art, and you definitely should not feel limited by the software you’re using, especially when you’re composing let’s say meterless music or you just want to experiment or try some new ideas. You should be able to put any drafts or incomplete pieces of music on your score, and the software should always encourage you to do that. That should work in a way like if you would do the same on a piece of paper.
For some reason, we all decided that the interface with dozens of panels where you have to find an element in order to put it on the sheet music is something convenient and easy. But is it really?
Not only is it difficult to design such tools in a proper way (and to decide what actually constitutes ‘proper’), but it’s also difficult to learn how to use those tools. Look at these tools — they all so different, yet they share so many similar problems. And if you want to change a tool or just to try something new, you have to learn new positions of each element in the user interface.
I believe that sheet music should be treated as a document, something you can write in a flow and not to be distracted by anything in the software. Something you can understand how it’s created, something that you can easily copy, reproduce or share.
Any music score has a structure, therefore you can describe this structure. And how to do that? My answer is writing. We should be able to write our music score. We don’t have music symbols on our keyboards, but we don’t need them. Each symbol, each idea can be replaced with words.
Writing is the most underestimated thing in how user interacts with the software, although it’s getting somewhat better with increasing popularity of chatbots.
Writing is considered energy consuming thing by many people, which is really unfair. It’s much easier to get faster at writing than on other types of ways of expressing your ideas.
Especially when you are used to a set of rules, it’s really easy to write. When you’re writing and you’re good at it, you don’t think about how to write something. You’re thinking more about the ideas you’re about to put into the physical world.
I always felt like a monkey with all the tools out there. And I want to feel like a human being. I just want to think about my ideas and what I should write. I don’t want to think about anything else.
If you have similar feelings, I got good news for you. There is a one tool that can help you to feel that way. It’s called Unison.
These are the reasons why you may like Unison more than other apps:
1. **Unison** allows you to effortlessly create music simply by typing, without the need to scour multiple panels to drag elements onto a canvas, resulting in an uninterrupted workflow.
2. Using a simple yet powerful set of rules or commands in plain English, you can generate sheet music of varying levels of complexity. The rules are designed to be easily understood by any musician, making the process accessible to all.
3. **Unison** boasts a robust editor that allows you to write descriptions for your score, complete with features such as highlighting, command autocomplete, and navigation between the text in the editor and the image rendered by the text.
5. Another strong feature of **Unison** is documentation, where you can easily search for an example on certain things. You can quickly find specific commands and even copy them for testing.
4. With **Unison**, you can enjoy a modern and minimalistic design for the fonts, as well as precise positioning of musical elements.
5. **Unison** not only enables you to create sheets of music, but also to store, share, and export them into different formats, including SVG and PDF.
